Car Air Conditioning Servicing - Dundalk

What are the different types of vehicle air conditioning gases?

Modern cars and vans use different types of air conditioning refrigerants, each designed to keep your cabin cool while meeting environmental standards.

The three most common are R134a, R1234yf, and R744.

R134a has been the industry standard for many years and is still found in most vehicles manufactured before 2017. It replaced older, environmentally harmful gases and remains widely available and affordable. However, while effective, it has a higher global warming potential than newer alternatives.

R1234yf is the next-generation refrigerant and is now used in the majority of vehicles built after 2017, especially in Europe. This gas is far more environmentally friendly, with a much lower impact on the atmosphere. It does, however, require specialised servicing equipment, making it a little more expensive to recharge.

R744, also known as CO₂ refrigerant, represents the latest advancement in automotive air conditioning technology. Increasingly fitted to electric, hybrid, and high-end vehicles such as Mercedes-Benz and models from the VW Group, R744 systems operate under higher pressure and are very efficient and sustainable.

In addition to regassing air-conditioning systems, McKeown Auto Services is also able to fully service the air conditioning system in your vehicle.  We test system pressure and cooling performance, and inspect the compressor, belts, hoses, and condenser. If required, we add leak-detection dye and check or replace the cabin air filter. This service and the relevant regas restores cold, clean air and keeps your A/C system working efficiently.
